MEDICARE AND LIFESTAGE FOCUS GROUPS

CLIENT:

Minnesota Department of Human Services, Minnesota Board on Aging, and State Health Access Data Assistance Center (SHADAC)

DESCRIPTION:

As a part of the Own Your Future Minnesota Initiative, the Minnesota Department of Human Services (MDHS) contracted OMS to conduct six focus groups with senior citizens on the topic of including a long-term care benefit in Medicare supplemental plans and four focus groups with Minnesotans aged 35-55 regarding the inclusion of a long-term care insurance benefit in their employee benefit package.

OMS consulted with a larger external team on the development of discussion guides, screening protocol, and recruiting methodology for all ten focus groups. OMS also facilitated all ten focus groups in various locations across the state of Minnesota and provided a notetaker.

RESULTS:

Focus groups for the Long Term Care Insurance were conducted in Alexandria, West Saint Paul, and Edina, Minnesota. Data for the Medicare Supplemental Insurance project was obtained from focus groups conducted in Austin, Fergus Falls, Maple Grove, Minnetonka, North Saint Paul, and Saint Cloud, Minnesota.

OMS facilitated transcription of the focus groups, conducted qualitative analysis, and created two separate reports on each topic with accompanying recommendations to inform future decisions regarding healthcare in Minnesota.
