Understanding the Class List Report

The Class List Report produced by OMS gives the test scores of individual participants. Two types of class lists are available: the raw score list and the converted score list. Sequencing is also available for teachers seeking alternative ordering of results.

Raw Score Class List

The Raw Score Class List gives the total test score and the raw score for as many as five test parts. The part scores may be from:

  • Separately scored parts of the test
  • Separate keys used to allow more than one response to be correct for certain items
  • Additional points recorded on the answer sheets.

The part scores may be given different weights, which are indicated at the top of each part-score column. The part scores are listed in their unweighted form and are multiplied by the specified weights in calculating the total score. If all weights are 1, the total score is the sum of the raw part scores. If the test consists of a single, unweighted part, only the total score is shown and the report does not refer to part scores.

Converted Score Class List

The Converted Score Class List gives the total raw score and three converted scores for each student: Standard Score, Percentile Tank, and Percent of Maximum. If the test has part scores, the raw part scores are listed but converted part scores are not given.

The RAW SCORE is the number of items answered correctly, unless the scores have been weighted or adjusted by the addition of special points, in which case the adjusted total score is shown. If the test contains part scores, the raw scores for the parts are shown.

The STANDARD SCORE is computed by subtracting the mean of the score distribution from each score and dividing the remainder by the standard deviation. To avoid negative and f ractional values the resulting score is multiplied by 10, and 50 is added. The formula is:

Standard score = [10(X - M)/SD] + 50, where
X = raw score
M = raw score mean of the group
SD = raw score standard deviation of the group.

The resulting scores have a mean of 50 and a standard deviation of 10. Each unit of the score scale is equal to one-tenth of a standard deviation.

Use of the standard score is recommended when combining scores from two or more tests if the intent is to give the scores equal weight in the composite (or some other specified weighting obtained by multiplying the scores by different constants). Simply adding raw scores, even from tests of equal length, may not achieve the intended weighting.

The PERCENTILE RANK (%ILE RANK) is the percent of students who scored below the mid-point of a given score. In computing percentile ranks, half the students with a given score are assumed to have scored above the mid-point and half are assumed to have scored below the mid-point of the score. The percentile rank is an easily understood score that indicates a student's relative standing without receiving knowledge of how others in the class scored.

The PERCENT OF MAXIMUM is the percentage that the raw score is of the maximum possible score. If the raw score is computed by weighting all test items 1, the percent of maximum is the percent of items answered correctly. If score weights were applied or special points were added, these are reflected in both the raw score and the maximum possible score. The percent-of-maximum score is an absolute measure of achievement that does not indicate relative standing in comparison with other students.

Sequencing

Class Lists may be in ALPHABETICAL NAME ORDER, in order by IDENTIFICATION NUMBER or by SCORE (from highest to lowest). Class Lists may also be ordered in the same order the answer sheets are received or in some other, specified order, e.g., alphabetic within subgroups. Subgroups can be specified by information gridded on the answer sheet, e.g., section number, or by groupings of answer sheets, which are maintained during processing. Lists can be provided without student names for posting. All gridded information is printed on the standard lists. If names are suppressed, identification number and section number are the only items printed with the exception of scores.
